Ontario Certification

Certification of Behaviour Analysts in Ontario

Certification for individuals practicing Behaviour Analysis in Ontario in varying capacities has been addressed in two ways. One is through BACB© certification and the other is through the development and eventual implementation of an Ontario based certification process. These two processes are described separately below.

Behavior Analysis Certification Board
On November 4, 2005, at the ONTABA annual conference, Dr. Gerald Shook presented a plan for BACB© certification of Ontario Behaviour Analysts. The plan was the culmination of a process of negotiation and collaboration between ONTABA and the Behavior Analysis Certification Board that will provide temporary (3 years) alternative pathways to certification. The alternative pathways was implemented in July 2006 and provides a means outside of the typical procedures and qualifications for BACB© certification that meets the challenges presented for Behavior Analysts in Ontario. The alternative pathways provides opportunity for certification of Behaviour Analysts in Ontario while educational programs are developed to provide the qualifications necessary for more traditional routes of certification through BACB©. It is the expectation that when the “window” created by alternative pathways is closed in 3 years, Ontarians will be able to qualify for BACB© through the more traditional pathway.

Transitional Certification Committee
Efforts by the Transitional Certification Committee (TCC) under the direction of the ONTABA Board of Directors for an Ontario based certification of practitioners of Behaviour Analysis have continued to progress well with the support from the Ministry of Child & Youth Services (MCYS). In the past year the TCC has focused on the development of a third category of certification to compliment the two categories that previously formed the core of the development of a certification process and certifying body in Ontario. This affords offering levels of certification that extend from direct service workers practicing Behaviour Analysis to those with higher levels of education, training and experience in Behaviour Analysis.
